                                Academics

Literature is the cornerstone of The Village School of Gaffney.  Children begin to read in kindergarten.  Reading
skills in each grade are enhanced through phonetic study and progresses from short stories to novels to
Shakespearean plays.  Literature is selected for quality of written expression and thought.

The written composition cycle starts in kindergarten with the traditional English method of narration.  The narration
technique becomes a study tool when students are required to remember more information.  Students are responsible
for following rules of written expression.  Upper School students write journal entries and weekly compositions.

The study of mathematics emphasizes visual explanations, use of manipulatives, problem-solving, and computation
for beginners.  Students progress with drill, incremental presentation of concepts, and opportunity for practice.

All students study science, history, and geography, emphasizing hands-on learning using the Core Knowledge sequence.
Students take trips, construct models, perform experiments, and carry out projects to demonstrate what they are learning.
Studies include U.S. and South Carolina history, geography, world cultures, and topics in life, earth, and physical science.

Beyond the core courses listed above, students also participate in several special areas.  Computer skills and usage begin
in 1st grade (second term).  All students study various art styles, artists, and a music composer each term.  Additionally,
conversational foreign language classes and physical education begin in kindergarten.
