Rupee opens 5 paise lower against US dollar amid rise in oil, Omicron worries

A rise in the US dollar index amid concern over the new and heavily mutated strain of the virus also ate into appetite for riskier emerging market currencies such as the rupee. The dollar index, which measures the US currency against a basket of six major rival currency pairs, rose to 96.27. The index hovered near the 96.15-96.17 mark around 4 pm (IST) on Friday.
